Diabetes (Madhumeha in Ayurveda) is classified under Prameha — a group of 20 urinary disorders caused by Kapha-Vata imbalance, excess Ama accumulation, and Meda Dhatu (fat tissue) dysfunction. Ayurveda has detailed, specific protocols for Prameha management that address not just blood sugar but the entire metabolic dysfunction underlying Type 2 Diabetes.
India has the second largest diabetic population in the world. Type 2 Diabetes, despite being called a lifelong condition, is fundamentally a metabolic disorder that is reversible in its early and middle stages. Ayurveda classifies Type 2 Diabetes as Sthula Prameha (obesity-associated) — a Kapha-Vata disorder — and Krisha Prameha (lean type) — more Vata dominant. Each has specific classical treatment.
The Prameha protocol focuses on three pillars: Shodhana (elimination of Ama), Lekhana (reducing Kapha-Meda), and Rasayana (pancreatic rejuvenation and insulin sensitivity restoration). Panchakarma plays a central role, particularly Virechana and Udwartana.
