The thyroid gland, known as the Agni-regulator of the body, corresponds closely to the concept of Dhatvagni (tissue-level metabolic fire) in Ayurveda. Hypothyroidism reflects dampened Agni (Mandagni) with Kapha-Vata dominance; hyperthyroidism reflects excessive Agni (Tikshna Agni) with Pitta-Vata dominance. Ayurveda corrects both by addressing the root metabolic imbalance.
Thyroid disorders affect over 42 million Indians, making India the world's thyroid disease capital. Most patients are told they'll need lifelong medication. Ayurveda disagrees — by systematically correcting Agni, eliminating Ama from the Rasa and Meda Dhatu, and using classical Lekhana and Brimhana herbs, significant TSH normalisation and symptom reversal is achievable in most cases.
The protocol is tailored to the type of thyroid disorder. Hypothyroidism is treated with Kapha-Vata reducing Panchakarma (Virechana, Udwartana) and Agni-stimulating classical herbs. Hyperthyroidism is approached with Pitta-pacifying, Medhya (nervine), and adaptogenic formulations.
