Hypertension (Rakta Gata Vata in Ayurveda) is primarily a Vata-Pitta disorder — excessive Vata deranging the normal flow in Rakta Vaha Srotas (blood vessels), aggravated by Pitta causing inflammatory changes in the vascular walls. Ayurveda treats hypertension by calming Vata, clearing Pitta, and restoring normal Rakta Dhatu function — addressing both the mechanical and neurological components.
Hypertension is called the 'silent killer' because it causes no symptoms until serious complications arise. Over 220 million Indians have hypertension. Ayurveda's approach is fundamentally different from conventional medicine: instead of blocking physiological pathways with drugs, it corrects the underlying Vata-Pitta imbalance, reduces Ama in the vascular system, calms the nervous system, and restores natural vascular tone.
Shirodhara is the signature Ayurvedic therapy for hypertension — the continuous stream of medicated oil on the forehead directly calms the autonomic nervous system, reducing both sympathetic overdrive and circulating stress hormones. This is combined with Virechana to clear Pitta-Ama from the vascular system.
