Osteoarthritis (Sandhivata in Ayurveda — literally “Vata in the joints”) is the most common joint disorder, caused by depletion of Shleshaka Kapha (the natural lubricating fluid in joints) due to aggravated Vata. As Vata dries up the joint, it causes crepitation (crackling sounds), pain on movement, and eventual cartilage erosion. Ayurveda reverses this by nourishing Shleshaka Kapha and pacifying Vata.
Osteoarthritis affects over 180 million Indians — more than diabetes. It is the leading cause of disability in the elderly and increasingly affects younger adults due to obesity and sedentary lifestyle. Conventional medicine offers only pain management (NSAIDs) with serious long-term side effects, or eventual joint replacement. Ayurveda's Sandhivata Chikitsa systematically restores joint lubrication, reduces inflammation, and regenerates cartilage tissue through Snehana (oleation) and Basti.
Janu Basti (knee oil pooling) is the signature Ayurvedic therapy for knee osteoarthritis — warm medicated oil pooled in a dough dam over the knee joint directly nourishes the cartilage, synovial membrane, and ligaments. Combined with systemic Basti (medicated enema), it addresses both local and systemic Vata.
