Sciatica (Gridhrasi in Ayurveda — named after the Gridhra or vulture, because of the gait resembling a limping bird) is a classic Vata disorder primarily affecting the Sira (nerve channels) of the lower extremities. Ayurveda treats sciatica by specifically pacifying Vata in the lumbar region, nourishing the sciatic nerve, and correcting the structural Vata imbalance through a combination of internal and external therapies.
Sciatica affects millions of Indians, often causing debilitating radiating pain from the lower back through the buttock, thigh, and leg. Conventional treatment — NSAIDs, steroids, or surgery — provides temporary relief without addressing the underlying Vata imbalance. Ayurveda, through Basti (the King of Vata treatments) and external therapies like Kati Basti, achieves lasting relief by nourishing the degenerated disc and nerve tissue.
Basti (medicated enema) is the primary treatment for all Vata disorders including sciatica — it directly nourishes the colon (seat of Vata) and through systemic absorption, pacifies Vata in the lumbar nerve roots. Kati Basti (localised oil pooling on the lower back) simultaneously provides direct nourishment and anti-inflammatory action at the site of nerve compression.
Our BAMS specialists will assess your prakriti and recommend the right protocol for you.
