Spondylosis (Grivagruha for cervical and Katigruha for lumbar) is a degenerative Vata disorder of the vertebral joints, classified under Asthi-Majja Kshaya (bone and marrow depletion) in Ayurveda. The progressive drying of intervertebral discs and vertebral endplates reflects systemic Vata aggravation depleting Asthi Dhatu (bone tissue). Ayurveda reverses this through Snehana, Basti, and Asthi-nourishing Rasayana.
Cervical and lumbar spondylosis affect over 50% of adults over 40 in India. The condition causes chronic neck/back pain, radiating arm/leg pain, headaches, and in severe cases, myelopathy (spinal cord compression). Ayurveda's approach of systematic Asthi Dhatu nourishment through Basti, external Snehana, and Rasayana has proven highly effective in reversing early-to-moderate spondylosis and preventing surgical intervention.
Greeva Basti (cervical) and Kati Basti (lumbar) are the localised oil-pooling therapies that deliver warm medicated oil directly to the affected spinal segments — nourishing the degenerated discs, reducing inflammation, and restoring joint mobility. Systemic Basti (medicated enema) corrects the underlying Vata excess that drives bone degeneration.
