Basti — Medicated Enema Therapy

Basti is considered the most important and versatile of all Panchakarma procedures — often called the "King of Therapies." It involves the administration of medicated oils and herbal decoctions through the anal route to cleanse the colon, nourish the nervous system, and eliminate deep-seated Vata imbalances. It is the primary therapy for all Vata disorders.

Basti works directly on the colon — the primary site of Vata dosha in Ayurveda. Medicated substances are absorbed through the colon wall and act systemically on the entire body, particularly the nervous system and bones. Two main types are used: Anuvasana Basti (oil-based, nourishing) and Niruha Basti (decoction-based, cleansing), administered in alternating courses.
